Bird House

In the middle of Page, Arizona we found a restaurant that specializes in fried chicken. It’s an odd location, but it’s a place that easily rivals the popular chicken chains.

The Birdhouse is built in what was once a Sonic. The indoor structure has been expanded around to the covered parking where guests once made their orders. To Taylor, it was very reminiscent of someone building a house in the bones of a large dead creature that you might read in a fantasy novel.

We ordered a three pieces tender meal with homemade pickles, *the best* chicken sandwich with mac and cheese, and an extra side of fries. Birdhouse offers three styles of chicken: original, spicy, and honey butter. We both ordered spicy chicken versions, although Michelle later wished we had also tried the honey butter option. We sat down, and our meal was brought out after a few minutes. The chicken was lightly breaded, but was heavily seasoned. The seasoning is clearly seen in the breading, and it adds a lot of great flavor.

The chicken itself is cooked perfectly and is very juicy. The spicy tenders have a good kick, but aren’t overpowering. The chicken sandwich is made on a brioche bun with a few pickles on it, topped with 2 tenders, and a spread of Birdhouse sauce on the top bun. The Birdhouse sauce is their take on tangy honey mustard and compliments their chicken wonderfully.  The homemade pickles are very fresh and vinegary pickled cucumbers and cauliflower. The mac and cheese was super creamy and cheesy.

We were quite surprised to find chicken this good in such a remote location. It’s a shame the Birdhouse is so far away, because we would love to eat there more often. We’ll just have to make sure to stop by again whenever we pass though Page again.
