Grand Canyon Secret Spot
/Hidden away from the main trails and viewpoints at the Grand Canyon is a secret place with amazing views that very few tread.
On our last visit to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon some friends told us about a secret area with few tourists. So we decided to follow their directions and went exploring in hopes of finding this secluded place. We parked our car on the side of the road and walked through the forest for just over a mile. The hike itself is a pleasant, quiet one that took us through the forest until we finally spotted a break in the trees and the canyon revealed itself to us once again.
The first area we came to had a great wide view of the canyon. Michelle found a shady spot to sit under a tree where she just took in the view for what seemed like forever. As great as this view was, it would only get better as we proceeded further along the rim.
As we continued down the rim we came to a point where the rim peaks out into the canyon itself. The viewpoint is marked by a large, monolith-like standing stone. Getting out to the point was fairly easy.
Here we walked precariously to the edge of the canyon with no railing. Much to Michelle’s dismay, Taylor walked a bit closer to the edge than she would. From this point we were treated to a nearly 300 degree view of the canyon.
From here we could see many of the landmarks that we were used to seeing from the North Rim such as: Wotan’s Throne, Vishnu Temple, Zoroaster Temple, Brahma Temple, and Buddha Temple to name a few.
This spot was breathtaking and we could easily spend all day here just taking in the view, it was unfortunately a bit hot still in August and there was no shade at the point. So Taylor got as many shots of the canyon as he could before we returned to the previous vista with a nice shady seat.
With how busy the South Rim can be, it’s nice to go on a quiet hike similar to how many on the North Rim are. But the real treat is the stunning views at the end of this largely unknown path.
