Haunted Hamburger
/We don’t make our way to Jerome very often, but when we do we always make sure to eat at the Haunted Hamburger. The restaurant is nestled high up the hill and offers patrons some nice views to go along with the tasty food. The Haunted Hamburger’s name is fitting since Jerome is the most famous ghost town in Arizona. There are plenty of other restaurants in the small town, but it’s hard to pass up going to one of our favorite spots to get a great burger.
Taylor has been coming to Jerome for years, and the Haunted Hamburger has always been a smaller restaurant that took up half the building and had a covered patio that extends off the side. However, the Haunted Hamburger has recently been renovated in the past few years. When we arrived this time we hardly recognized the front of the building. They expanded into the other half of the building and repainted the whole thing. The front entrance had moved to the opposite side as well. With the expansion they gave the interior a more modern and hip design and most importantly now have more seating areas.
The Haunted Hamburger is a popular restaurant and can fill up quickly around peak meal times. We managed to come right as they opened and were the first customers. We ended up getting prime seats on the rear balcony that overlooks the town and valley below. This spot seats only a small number of people so it is also much quieter.
Even though the interior and exterior has changed, the menu has pretty much stayed the same. We ordered tea, fried pickles, a BBQ Burger with an egg, and a Southwest Sourdough Burger with an egg.
Michelle had been wanting fried pickles for months and was ecstatic when she saw they had some on the menu. The spears were battered and fried to perfection. The coating had a nice crunch to it and wasn’t too thick - it was perfect. On the side it came with a chipotle ranch dipping sauce that was spicy but not too spicy.
Michelle ended up getting the BBQ Burger and had an egg added to it. The burger itself was thick and cooked to perfection. It was topped with a BBQ sauce that was very good and tangy. The frizzled onions were delicious and added a nice crunch. The egg was nice and runny while the bacon was thick and yummy. On the side were fries that were nice and crispy.
Taylor ordered the Southwest Sourdough Burger with an egg. Just like Michelle’s, the burger was thick and tasty. The guacamole was creamy, delicious, and spilling out the sides. The bacon was great and the egg was runny. There was a slight kick from the pepper jack cheese and green chilies. Overall, this burger was a bit messy, but it was worth it. Due to the messiness, once Taylor picked up the burger he said he had to keep eating it till it was gone.
The Haunted Hamburger has amazing food and is still one of our favorite places to get a burger. The only downside is that it is so far away, but it’s nice to plan weekend trips to Jerome and know that we’ll be treated to some fantastic food.
