Itamae Sushi Edo

We’ve been to many traditional and modern styled restaurants in Japan, so we thought we should go to a fun themed restaurant. We decided to eat at Itamae Sushi Edo and made some reservations online. Making reservations are easy even if you don’t speak Japanese; all you have to do is visit their English website and follow the links. There are two different English websites, though, which is a bit confusing. To see their full menu you have to find the English version of their Japanese site. The simple way to differentiate is that the English site has a dark theme while the Japanese-English site is light.

From Shinbashi Station near our hotel, it was only 3 short stops to Akasaka-mitsuke Station. Once we exited the subway station, the restaurant was a few hundred feet away.

At the entrance we had to take off our shoes and store them in old fashioned lockers with these fun little wood block locks. We were so hungry that we forgot to stop and pick out a complimentary yukata to wear while we dined. One of the most fun parts of this restaurant is the decor. It’s done up in the style of the Edo period - plenty of Japanese lanterns and light-colored wood fixtures. We were taken down from the entrance to the counter seats we had reserved. The restaurant was surprisingly empty for 7 pm on a Sunday night. It was nice though having it less crowded.

One of the convenient aspects of this and many Japanese restaurants is that there is usually some form of an English menu. The next time we go back to Japan we hope to be able to read and speak more Japanese, but for this trip we tended to eat at places with either English menus or with photos on the menu. We ordered some sake and tea to share while we decided what to eat. Along with our sake we ordered a cucumber salad mix. In addition, we were given a small bowl with what seemed to be tuna salad. Both were quite tasty.

Everything on the menu looked fantastic. One of the main menu items is called the Edo Tower. It looked very tempting, but since we didn’t know for sure what pieces of sushi it came with we ordered the “Best Sushi Combo” platter. This platter came with 14 different items. Unfortunately we don’t remember everything that came on the assorted plate, but we know there were 4 pieces of fatty tuna, unagi, salmon roe, sea urchin, minced tuna, shrimp, and a small piece of sweet Japanese omelette. All the pieces were delicious, especially Michelle’s favorite, the fatty tuna. She isn’t a fan of roe or urchin, so Taylor ended up eating those. The platter came with only one piece of unagi sushi, which was definitely not enough for us. So we ordered a set of 4 additional unagi sushi.

The meal was very good and the atmosphere was fun. Itamae Sushi Edo is worth visiting if you want to eat at an interesting place and have the opportunity to dress up accordingly too.
