Sweetie's Sandwich Shop

After hiking up a bunch of sand dunes we needed to find something for lunch. So we headed up to Salida and stopped at Sweetie’s Sandwich Shop. Little did we know this would end up being one of the best sandwiches we’ve ever had.

Food options around the Great Sand Dunes National Park are rather limited, so we drove north for about an hour till we came to Salida. Salida is located in central Colorado along US 50 and is just east of US 285. We headed down G Street through a cute neighborhood till we came to the downtown area where Sweetie’s Sandwich Shop is located. Sweetie’s Sandwich Shop is located on the corner of Sackett Avenue and G Street. We actually walked past most of the shop since the only sign is on the corner and out of our view, but we realized we passed one of the entrances and went in.

Once inside we had the daunting task of picking from the over 40 different sandwiches offered. There are so many choices and they all sound great, but we decided on the Rocky Balboa and the Flaming Goat. Sweetie’s Sandwich Shop is also a bakery, so we also grabbed a Gingerbread Moonpie to eat later.

The plan to eat the Gingerbread Moonpie later didn’t last too long. While waiting for the sandwiches Taylor opened it up, and we had a few bites. We were expecting the filling to be super sweet, but we were very wrong. The moonpie consisted of two soft gingerbread cookies with a slightly sweet cream cheese filling in the middle. The combination of the delicious soft cookies and the not too sweet filling was fantastic. Looking back, we wish we had gotten more from the bakery for later.

After a short time our sandwiches came out. Taylor got the Rocky Balboa, which was a well-toasted baguette that’s topped with smoked ham, pepperoni, salami, roasted red peppers, provolone cheese, and covered with a garlic aioli. The meat was hot, the cheese was melted and oozing everywhere, and the garlic aioli was dripping all over. It didn’t look like too much, but it was amazing. Michelle ordered the Flaming Goat, which was well-toasted honey wheat bread topped with bacon, avocado, pesto mayo, goat cheese, lettuce, and tomato. The sandwich was super creamy with the combination of avocado, goat cheese, and pesto mayo, contrasting with delicious crunchy bacon, crisp lettuce, and fresh tomato. Her only complaint was that the crust on the bread was a little too hard, but that didn’t tarnish how good this sandwich was.

Sweetie’s Sandwich Shop is so good that we recommended it to some friends who were travelling through Colorado. They stopped by and had the same reaction as we did about the sandwiches - they’re simply amazing. They joked about now needing to move to Salida just to eat there all the time. Now they’re going to tailor any of their trips to the state to include a stop at Sweetie’s Sandwich Shop.

Taking the short detour to Salida and eating at Sweetie’s was definitely worth the time. Everything on the menu sounds amazing, and the two sandwiches we had were easily some of the best sandwiches we had ever eaten. We’ll need to make sure the next time we’re in Colorado that we find a reason to detour down to Salida and stop by Sweetie’s Sandwich Shop. There are so many options, we have to try them all!
